INTRODUCTION TO DATA COMMUNICATIONS
Year Last Offered:
2025/6
Hours Per Week:
Grading Type:
N
Prerequisite Modules:
Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module provides a theoretical and practical overview of some of the means by which data is created, organised and communicated and considers some implications for same.
Via the introduction of basic technical, numeracy and statistical concepts required to read data and data driven research, students will develop a critical understanding of how data is gathered, created, analysed and mediated.
Syllabus:
Topics being covered by this module include:
• Introducing data communications; Defining key terms and concepts
• What is data and datafication? Examining the landscape of open data, public data and critically the process of datafication. Show how datasets and databases are built.
• Data modelling and algorithms - How data is classified, categorised and modelled; the technical process of algorithmic decision making and developing students ability to analyse and evaluate potential limitations in the process.
• Understanding data driven methodologies: Exploring the most common ways data is used and developed in research and highlighting means of evaluating the quality and limitations of data and different data driven methodologies.
• Data and disciplines: Different approaches to data in science, social science, politics, business and more.
• Data and the media: Developing a critical awareness of good and bad practices regarding the mediation of data driven information
• Data and regulation: Exploring the landscape of Irish and EU regulation around data and considering specific implications for data communications.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Understand and evaluate the process of producing data, purposes and uses of data in society;
Describe basic statistics and what they mean;
Understand the rules around collecting, retaining and communicating data.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Source and analyse publicly available data, Evaluate the process of datafication and data modelling and explain how it is used for communications purposes.
