Prerequisite Modules:
Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
The aim of this module is to introduce students to practical issues that arise in advancing equality, diversity and inclusion and the impact these issues have on communities and professional organisations. Case studies and site visits will be used to give students a real appreciation of the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion and the impact that supportive policies have on organisational culture. Interaction with leaders who have championed change in their own professional context will equip learners with the essential competencies necessary to meet the challenges of today's rapidly changing world. Students will be provided with the tools to enable them to identify an aspect of their own professional environment that falls short of best practice and develop an action place to positively address that issue. This is the first of two inter-related modules that allow students to interrogate issues of equality in practice.
Please note that this module will be offered on the Graduate Certificate/Diploma in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and so section 13 'Programmes Offering this Module' has been left blank below.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
The module will be taught using face-to-face workshops and site visits. Fortnightly on-campus workshops will be held on a different topic pertaining to equality in practice. The workshops will be led by experts in the particular field and will be used to introduce students to contemporary issues in this area and provide them with an overview of practical strategies adopted by that organisation to address same. In the following fortnight, a site visit will be undertaken to the organisation in question to provide students with first-hand experience of the organisational culture. This will allow students to explore and critically evaluate the strategies adopted. Through critical reflection, students will document their perceptions and attitudes to the site visits and will record their learning throughout the module, including any changes in their perceptions of certain areas and issues. This critical reflection by the students will contribute to the cognitive and affective outcomes of the module.
University of Limerick - Graduate Attributes:
This module will promote student knowledge and will enhance their capacity for critical thinking. Through directed and independent research, students will address practical issues arising in equality, diversity and inclusion in the community and workplace and will evaluate the success of otherwise of strategies for change.
Discussion with the expert speakers and classmates during these face-to-face sessions will allow the students to articulate independent research conducted by them and to clearly convey ideas to an audience of their peers. This will result in collaborative learning where students will learn from one another to reach creative solutions to practical problems. The critical reflections will allow students to adopt a responsible and engaged response to their learning and will encourage students to formulate ideas to bring about positive change in their own setting.
