Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module maps applied linguistics to some of the the many areas within which language based issues are implicated, such as institutional discourses - legal, media, educational, political, amongst others. The module builds connections between these inter-related areas and language-problem-related orientations as modes of enquiry, and guides participants to methods of exploring problems and needs within applied linguistics.

Syllabus:

The module introduces theoretical and analytical backgrounds connected to applied linguistics and the professions. Key areas include the language and cultural politics of the media in terms of power relationships, ownership, representation, cultural bias, and linguistic commentary in the media. The syllabus is responsive, and indicative areas of interest include education (especially second language teaching and learning); professional talk and institutional/workplace discourse; intercultural communication more generally; language and the legal professions in applied linguistics, such as forensic linguistics; language description and exploration - lexicography; stylistics, and broader areas such as political discourse.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - Connect applied linguistics with a number of professional and disciplinary areas; - Evaluate in critical and practical terms how language is implicated in the professions; - Apply this knowledge to their own professional and disciplinary areas.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - Appreciate the embeddedness of language across a variety of disciplines, professions and contexts; - Demonstrate an enhanced awareness of these connections and their implications in various professions.

This module promotes active engagement and prioritises practical applications. There is a blend of online and face-to-face seminar sessions. Faculty teaching on the programme integrate findings from their own research to the module. It supports the development of UL graduate attributes by helping students to increase their knowledge with relation to their own experience of language, its relation to the construction and maintenance of institutions and institutional discourse. Students participate in an active learning environment which challenges them to be collaborative as they apply theoretical knowledge about language to the various disciplines and professions in which they are involved/interested in creative and innovative ways. A professional, responsible approach to the language professions, and a focus on the global, cultural and intercultural contexts of language are prioritised.
