Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

Study abroad is widely recognised as a key means for developing a range of personal and professional skills and for fostering intercultural skills and awareness. The Applied Linguistics External Academic Placement is designed to maximise flexiblity with regard to the study abroad experience whilst at the same time ensuring that students are given the opportunity to enhance their personal and professional skills in a coherent way. Students will, together with the Course Director and Erasmus/Study Abroad advisor, select an appropriate programme at one of UL's partner institutions overseas. They must obtain the credits for this programme and they must also record and reflect on their programme and expeiences in a shared blog with other students. they will also carry out an applied linguistics data collection project during their placement. On return to UL, they will give a presentation to fellow students and faculty on their experience.

Syllabus:

In consultation with academic advisor and course director, students will select a semester-long programme of study at one of UL's partner institutions. They will keep an online blog to record and reflect on their experiences during the external academic placement, they will carry out an applied lingusitics data collection project. and, on return to UL, having successfully obtained credits for their programme, they will give a presentation on their experience and learning.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Students will participate in an approved programme of study at one of UL's partner institutions overseas. Students will carry out an applied linguistics data collection project in their chosen location. Peer-based learning is a key feature of the module, and this will help enhance collaboration: students will record and reflect on this experience and share it with fellow students. Responsiblity will be a key attritube to be fostered as a result of the study abraod experience.
