Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The aim of this module is to heighten awareness of the role that language plays in perpetuating exclusion and also the role it can play in promoting inclusion. A key focus is on language policy and planning (LPP), since this is at core of implementing meaningful change in language practices and beliefs within organisations. In addition to acquiring the theories and methods of LPP, students will also acquire the skills to carry out their own analyses and to develop an appropriate language policy and plan for equality, diversity and inclusion in organisation of their choice. Ultimately, the purpose of the module is to enable students to identify and help to solve language problems in organisational contexts and to bring about positive transformations in their own setting.

Syllabus:

The module will cover the following areas, building on each other - Why and when language matters: the politics of language; language ideologies; linguistic diversity; critical discourse analysis. - Language management: language policy and planning (LPP); - Methods for analysing language, diveristy and inclusion in organisations; - How to write a language policy and plan for equality and inclusion in organisation.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - Evaluate and critique language use in organisational contexts - Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the practical issues that arise in advancing language and inclusion in organisations - Identify strategies such as language policies and plans to advance inclusion in the community and/or the workplace/organisation.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, studnets will be able to: - Critically analyse the role that language plays in promoting inclusion or perpetuating exclusion - Interpret how language beliefs and ideologies can contribute to these problems/solutions - Demonstrate leadership in challenging these behaviours and practices and advancing change

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module will be delivered entirely remotely. The module aims to engage students in proactive and creative learning both independently and as part of a collective online forum. It aims to enable students to broaden their understanding of the discipline and articulate their understanding through written and digital communication. Methods of teaching will include pre-recorded lectures, lecture notes, self-access tutorials and online reading materials. Students are encouraged to make extensive use of online discussion forums for interacting with each other. This module will promote student knowledge and will enhance students' capacity for critical thinking. Through directed and independent research, students will address practical issues in relation to language and inclusion in organisations and will proactively develop a plan for change (Graduate attributes: courageous, agile). Discussion with peers via online discussion forums will facilitate peer-based learning and help students to articulate ideas and arguments (Graduate attribute: articulate) by learning from applying and acquiring knowledge to case studies from a range of contexts (Graduate attribute: agile). Self-directed tutorial activities develop problem-solving and critical analysis (Graduate attribute: curious). Students carry out a project on an organisation of their choice, reframing their organisation as a complex speech community and developing a language policy to implement change for lasting and meaningful EDI (Graduate attributea: Responsible). The module will enable students to identify and help to solve language problems in organisational contexts and to bring about positive transformations in their own setting (Graduate attribute: courageous).
