Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

- To initiate self-directed study as a means of (1) deepening knowledge / expertise within a primary specialisation (2) developing skills and knowledge in a secondary area of specialisation (3) engaging in creative, cross-platform study / performance through a combination of a variety of areas. - To allow a variety of project presentation and negotiable assessment weighting, encouraging the student to propose a form of presentation most suitable to the project and the educational journey, as well as a form of assessment capable of accurately evaluating the outcomes.

Syllabus:

This module offers students the opportunity to pursue self-directed learning of an academic or perfor mance-based project, under the guidance of the course director and supervisor. The student may wish to use the module to pursue more specialised study in his / her area of study, or to access the ot her areas of expertise available at the centre. These currently include Ethnomusicology, Ethnochore ology, Music Education, Community Music, Music Therapy, Irish Traditional Music and Dance Performance, Classical String Performance, Contemporary Dance Performance, Ritual Chant andSong, Festive Arts, and other specialist research interests of faculty and doctoral researchers at the Academy.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

1. Demonstrate the ability to design a self-directed programme of study with reference to programme content, resources and assessment. 2. Construct a programme of study which is relevant to the primary programme specialisation but which may involve the development of a secondary specialisation. 3. Create a performance, composition or academic study as part of the output of theindependent programme of study. 4. Evaluate the learning process and the creative output of the independent programme of study.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Value the research process necessary to the design and implementation of an independent programme of study.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

1. Create (compose, choreograph) new work where appropriate to the study goal. 2. Combine practical and theoretical learning in the creation of new work.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The teaching mode will depend on the individual project and will be agreed with the student in consultation with the course director and supervisor. Students are expected to be both proactive and creative in designing their project which could include research as well as collaborative performance elements.
