Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The purpose of this module is to introduce students to key concepts, practices and discourses related to contemporary arts management, production and policy making. Through lectures and seminars, students will critically explore the frameworks around arts practice and development across a number of disciplines and art forms.

Syllabus:

In this module, students will be introduced to key issues and concepts in arts management and cultural policy through a course of lectures and seminars. These issues will include governance and the creation of policy, the judgement of value, the structure of arts policy and management, audience development and community engagement, and the role of management within arts organisations and art production. Students will also engage with key theoretical positions which inform contemporary management and policy practice. Through the seminars, students will be encouraged to critically debate, evaluate and articulate their own positions around these issues and concepts. Students will also explore policy and management issues in comparative contexts, looking at similarities and differences between Irish arts management and cultural policy, and the situation in other areas.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be taught through a combination of both lectures and seminars. Students will be introduced to key concepts and issues in arts management and cultural policy through lectures which focus on contemporary issues in practice, relating theoretical concepts to practical examples. These lectures will be accompanied by a seminar series where students will be expected to critically engage with both key texts and their own experience and knowledge around arts management and cultural policy. This learning experience will encourage students to be both articulate and collaborative, as they will learn in a practical way from the experiences of others, and will engage with art forms and practices other than their own. In combining both theoretical and practical examples within the teaching of this course, students are encouraged to be proactive and creative in overcoming challenges in development supportive and sustainable frameworks for the creation and development of the creative arts. Recent research findings in the subject and recent developments in the field will therefore be at the heart of the teaching method engaged, as students will explore contemporary theory and practice throughout the module.
