To provide an overview of the development of choreography-for-camera within the context of contemporary dance/arts practices; to introduce students to the range of aesthetic and technical approaches to choreography-for-camera through analysis of key representative works in this field of practice; to prepare students to work technically and creatively through this medium.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module is taught through a series of lectures, demonstrations, DVD viewings, discussions, and workshops/ experiential exercises. The lecture series provides a general survey of this field's development, an analysis of key representative works and introduces students to a range of aesthetic and technical approaches to filming and editing. Students also view and discuss selected examples of historical and current works by established video dance artists whose works are exhibited both nationally and internationally. In this regard the students become knowledgeable about on-going developments in this field of contemporary arts practice. In the series of labs and workshops students undertake a range of task-based exercises which provide them with opportunities to creatively explore how dance can be considered in terms of the filmed frame in contrast to staged viewing: framing, shots and angles. As part of this process they have an opportunity to collaborate with their peers through performing in each other's works. Students also study and practice the skills necessary to edit their material using the most up-to-date professional level editing suites. Students create a short choreography-for-camera which reflects their artistic and critical-engagment with the medium of film, dance and choreography.
