Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module is designed to provide an awareness of professional development skills and contexts central to developing a career in the arts. It introduces students to several key facets of planning, arts project management, and career development as part of their professional development.
Syllabus:
This module provides students with an introduction to core skills and concepts relevant to the development of performing arts careers in the contemporary world. Key issues covered include project development, planning, communications and pitching, as well as collaborative work, legal structures for working individually or in groups, and fundraising.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
To equip students with a range of skills relevant to creative and cultural industries related to performance nationally and internationally.
To create an understanding of the mechanisms involved in global arts management, including domestic and global funding opportunities.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
To create a culture of business awareness amongst performers and practitioners.
To foster confidence in dealing with the bureaucracies of the arts funding world both nationally and internationally.To create an awareness of the legal complexities of legally-binding documentation such as intellectual property.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
The module is taught through a formal lecture and follow up lab / seminars plus independent study. The course encourages independent form filling, grant application writing, business plan writing and so forth with relevant feedback given to the individual student. The students will work in groups and provide presentations on an ongoing basis. This will facilitate the development of the graduate attributes of being collaborative, responsible, creative and proactive.
