Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The purpose of this module is to familiarise students with different technologies and applications suitable for music therapy, and to teach students to be able to use these effectively in a standard music therapy session.

Syllabus:

Students will develop their knowledge of media and assistive technologies so that they can use, describe, reflect and critically assess the role of music technology in clinical music therapy settings. Syllabus will cover: General terminology, Audio and video recording, Editing/Sampling, Saving/Exporting, Applications in therapy, MIDI, Controllers Keyboard, drum pad, QWERTY, other; VSTs (virtual instruments) MIDI effects; Loops, triggering, MIDI Mapping; Applications in therapy; Production Multitracking; Arrangement and sequencing; Effects; hand-held devices, assistive technology, student-owned devices

1. Compare and contrast media and assistive technologies available for clinical therapy 2. Explain concepts and principles relating to using media and assistive technology in music therapy clinical contexts.

1. Consider and reflect on issues of music therapy practice relating to media and assistive technology such as consent, ethical concerns, autonomy and rights of ownership

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Module is taught by weekly lectures and hands on tutorials and on clinical placement where students will use technology in the workplace. This topic is relevant and important for the modern music therapist.
