Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module will provide a conceptual basis for dance as an education tool. It will interrogate and extend students' knowledge and understanding of the content, methodologies and assessment procedures relevant to the teaching and learning of dance in a variety of teaching contexts. It will equip students with the skills to design and implement material for Dance Pedagogy and to engage in critical debate on the nature and principles of dance in both formal and informal educational contexts.
Syllabus:
The module aims to introduce a range of teaching and learning strategies in dance. It teaches the knowledge and skills to design effective and safe dance classes. It will help facilitate critical thinking and reflective capacities for learning. It will include teaching philosophies, SMART goals for planning dance classes and the ethics of good practice in dance teaching. It covers knowledge and competency of best practice in Dance education including dance aesthetics, creativity and child/student centered pedagogy.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Apply knowledge and understanding of different dance education contexts. Demonstrate awareness and ability to utilize best practice surrounding child-centred pedagogy and student led engagement through dance. Show an awareness of learner differences, including different learning styles and Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. Engage in debate on the current thinking in dance in education.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate critical thinking and reflective capacities for learning. Better understand and articulate personal philosophical and pedagogical strengths and preferences. Examine and be conversant with current practices in teaching and learning in dance.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Develop greater communication and team work skills through participating in group activities.
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
The module will be taught in practical studio based workshops ,online workshops, lectures, seminars and case study research. Students teaching and research skills, knowledge base and discovery skills will be enhanced.
