Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module provides skills and knowledge to allow experienced dancers to work in healthcare settings, under the supervision of, and in collaboration with, medical healthcare professionals. The content will cover practices that promote a healthy and mindful approach to movement while also helping dancers apply their knowledge for use across a range of healthcare situations. This module will provide preparation for clinical placement and contextualization, through theory and studio-based practice. The continued development of an integrated mind/body approach will enable students to facilitate appropriate and effective dance classes for multiple populations to increase: mobility, cardiovascular function, agency and expression, while minimizing risk of injury

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Based on current research particularly from the UL arts and health research network, this module has been created in collaboration with the dance experts, healthcare practitioners and the music therapy team at the University of Limerick. This module engages students with best practice and recent theory in the fields of both dance and health. Students will engage in active learning, peer teaching and both studio-based and theory-based teaching. This module promotes proactive and creative learning by encouraging students to utilize theory to design and create dance classes for a wide range of abilities to be delivered in healthcare settings.
