Grading Type:
N
Prerequisite Modules:
Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
To give a basic appreciation of the Cellular-Material Interactions that occur when a Material is used for different Biomedical Applications
Syllabus:
Changes that occur in tissue architecture associated with different diseases. Approaches to repair of dysfunctional tissue Cellular response to surgical intervention in presence/absence of a material. Biomimetic materials and their influence on Cell-material interaction. Biochemical/pharmacological role of cells Influence of physiological environments within the body on material performance/chemical and mechanical stability. Relevance of testing to medical device design strategy, regulation, validation and post market surveillance. Evolution of the regulatory environment and its implications, specifically focusing on ISO 10993 Biological evaluation of Medical Devices.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Review Cell Biology in terms of cellular Structure, Function, Energetics, Communication and Transport.
2. Give an overview of Cellular adaptation, injury, death, aging and cancer
3. Demonstrate understanding both of tissue architectures and selected relevant tissue and cellular pathologies
4. Describe generic wound healing responses and relationships with material implant reactions / responses
5. Give an overview of the immune system and its cellular responses.
