Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This course is designed to give an understanding of the importance of Forecasting and Scheduling in the operation of the supply chain and obtaining of a competitive advantage. The key is to understand Inventory Management -the types and classification of inventories and how inventory polices and planning techniques are so important to efficient operation of the supply chain. It deals with the methods for planning material requirements to support the master schedule. The concept of Capacity Requirements Planning (CRP) is introduced. By having a knowledge of the principles of demand management, sales and operations planning, master scheduling and distribution planning a firm can identify actions that facilitate smooth and efficient operation of the supply chain process

Syllabus:

Introduce and define Inventory Management -the types and classifications of inventory, Inventory policies and planning. Methods for planning material requirements to support the master schedule; Introduction to Capacity Requirements Planning (CRP); Procurement planning and external sources of supply.

Learning Outcomes:

Describe the role of inventory management and the different types of inventories and inventory polices in driving supply chain performance and the inter-relationships involved. Apply Inventory Management techniques. Describe the scope and function of Material Requirements Planning and its method and principles and its role in the organisation. Understand how to use information to develop the material plan and manage this process. Explain Capacity Requirements Planning (CRP) and evaluation of the techniques used to improve capacity. Describe the importance of establishing Supplier Partnerships and Relationships and the management of these. Explain the importance of Forecasting and Scheduling within a Supply chain management setting and; the challenges for managing the different elements that involve inventory management, master scheduling and capacity requirements planning. Explain the underlying systems that are required in Logistics and Supply Chain Management

This module will be taught in interactive lectures and by distance learning. While based on essential academic theories, concepts and techniques there will also be significant focus afforded to individual personal development allied with the practical application of learning within the workplace.
