Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is designed to provide an introduction to the role of the front line manager, and to develop understanding of the theories, concepts and techniques of self-management. Also to heighten awareness of personal effectiveness and develop skills in personal development planning and action planning. This module will provide insight and gain knowledge in the most salient theories of management and leadership and develop an understanding of the core competencies and skills associated with effective management and leadership.

Syllabus:

Syllabus includes - Role of front line manager, Identification of core management skills, Authority, Responsibility and Accountability, Managing Time: establishing objectives, setting priorities and scheduling time, Leadership theories and the Concept of Managerial/Leadership Styles, Essential Skills of effective Leadership, Distinguishing Leadership from Management.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. Define the role of the frontline manager and identify the personal management strengths required for this role. 2. Explain the relationship between Management and Leadership. 3. Identify and combine key theories of Leadership and Management. 4. Establish a deeper level of insight and understanding into leadership and management practices. 5. Engage in personal development planning and acknowledge its importance in effective Management and Leadership.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate the importance of time management and prioritising. 3. Integrate actions plans within career and workplace. 4. Acknowledge the importance of leadership and management practices.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be taught in a blended format with the online component facilitated by the University's Virtual Learning Environment(VLE). An action based learning approach will be followed using case studies and reflective practices to allow the learner to reflect on their professional development. Self-directed study is supported with guided reading and online content via the virtual learning environment. While based on essential academic theories, concepts and techniques there will also be significant focus afforded to individual personal development allied with the practical application of learning within the workplace. The module will be assessed using Tutor Marked Assignment(s) (TMA).
