Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

To provide a conceptual understanding of the role of the manager and to help apply techniques towards the self analysis of management and leadership styles, time management priorities, and planning or organisational skills To explore the main theories of management and leadership To critically evaluate the current practices of planning, organising leading and controlling within the organisation To heighten awareness of current personal effectiveness as a Manager and to provide action planning skills to help design personal development plans aimed at improving managerial performance To apply management skills and techniques to improving personal performance and team performance.

Syllabus:

Management: definitions, levels, skills, concepts and key issues; Understanding the Managers roles and the concept of management style; Differentiating and integrating the concepts of management and leadership; Leadership theories and skills; Personal effectiveness skills, including time management, planning and ongoing decision making and problem solving, delegation; Links between management, leadership and teamwork.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - Describe the main roles, functions and challenges faced by managers - Differentiate between management and leadership and the ways the two concepts can be integrated and linked to teamworking - Appraise the theories of leadership and relate these to their own personal styles to the workplace - Evaluate their own styles of leadership and identify areas of strengths and development - Recognise the importance of personal effectiveness in managing oneself before managing others - Analyse patterns of time usage, planning and ongoing, onesÆ time, and how to delegate tasks effectively - Apply different approaches to problem solving and decision-making

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - Challenge own values on current management style and reflect upon improved ways of managing and leading groups.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

As the module will be taught in a blended format with the online component facilitated by the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), participants will be given in advance a Study Guide setting out the structure of the module, details of 12 study units, and advice on tackling the assignment tasks and applying management skills within the workplace. Each of the study units will contain guided reading to help comprehend the fundamental management principles relevant to each of the main themes. At the Live online sessions participants will analyse and discuss the case studies which will be provided in advance of the session. A series of practical activities will be undertaken to challenge participants thinking and to help them apply the learning to their own jobs and organisations. Tutor feedback will be central to both the workshop activities and the follow-up tutor marked assignment.
