Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the area of management. It introduces students to key managerial issues and wider environmental factors affecting organisations.
Syllabus:
Management concepts and evolution, the development of Irish business, the global business environment, functions of management, planning, decision making, organising, staffing, leading, motivating, controlling.
Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
Define management and understand the managerial functions.
Distinguish between classical and contemporary theories of management.
Identify historical developmental stages in Irish business.
Analyse the current business environment using the tools of competitive and environmental analysis.
Describe the different theoretical approaches to each of the main functions of management.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
Appreciate historical influences on contemporary management approaches.
Recognise the complex nature of management in organisations today.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This course is taught from a general management perspective and requires students to actively engage in discussion on debate on nature and functional operations of management. Using a combination of lectures and case study based tutorials the module seeks to develop a critical understanding of management theory and practice. Students shall learn through a combination of the material presented during the sessions, practical exercises to develop skills associated with this knowledge, through interaction with their fellow students and through reflection on case studies presented during class time. The results, in combination, promote collaboration in problem solving, creativity in decision outcomes and articulation in communicating acquired knowledge.
