Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is one of two that addresses the domain of the strategic manager in both the private and public sector. The subject is typically seen as both a foundation and a capstone for a career at general manager and progressing from middle management level. Intellectually the academic underpinning comes from the grand theories tradition within strategic management allied with an emphasis on the behavioural, business model and future orientation dimensions of strategy.

Syllabus:

Strategy as a multi-performance perspective discipline. The schools of strategy. The value of strategy. Dimensions of strategic thinking. Measuring strategy. Strategy and environments - external and internal.Theories and practice of competitive advantage. Business model frameworks, deconstruction and critical analyses. Strategy under uncertainty incorporating Scenario planning and thinking. Strategic decision-making and performance.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Identify the dimensions of corporate strategy - process, content and context. Recognize the theories and application in practice of competitive advantage. Operationalize major concepts and techniques of contemporary strategic and business model analysis, option evaluation and choice to both private and public sector scenarios. Understanding of future thinking approaches with an emphasis on scenario planning approaches and techniques.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Synthesise theories of organizations as both rational profit/welfare maximizing entities and socially constructed experiences. Increased awareness of the ambiguity and paradox inherent in managing strategically both for the present and for the future. Increased awareness of the interdependence/interaction of business model components.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module is delivered by a mixture of methods: 1) Formal Lectures 2) Workshops 3) Course Projects The students learning experience moves through dependent/directed learning based on lectures, texts/papers and audio visual material; through to independent learning sourced from application of material to real strategic issues and encouraged wider reading and reflection. Graduate attributes will be developed in the following ways: Knowledgeable: Students will gain a deep knowledge of strategy and strategic tools both canonical and innovative (reflecting recent discipline breakthroughs and developments) through practical examples, coursework and in-class group work; Proactive: Students are expected to be proactive in their own learning through independent study and self-directed learning; Responsible: Students will develop a sense of responsibility through class discussions on various ethical issues; Collaborative: Students will be required to participate in class discussions and group work; Articulate: Students will become articulate in expressing advice through the use of in-class discussions, presentations and written coursework
