Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module helps experienced executives understand and apply leadership theory to the practice of their day-to-day work life. It is designed to bridge the understanding between leadership style, follower behaviour and the often-unconscious actions of leaders in positions of power and influence. The module utilises experiential learning and live case analysis to develop the following skills and abilities amongst participants.

Syllabus:

The general management point of view and the complexity of the leadership role including the management of symbolism, ambiguity and strategic change; leadership theory including servant, transactional, transformational leadership styles; emotional intelligence including inspiration, self awareness, self regulation and self efficacy; the mind, body and spirit of leadership, dark side of leadership including defensive routines, subconscious processes and organisational pathology; influencing and persuasion strategies in the context of political decision making; visionary leadership and change in the context of organisational renewal; ethics and dilemmas in leadership and the stakeholder perspective; leadership , governance and the role of the board of directors, new directions in leadership research and practice including the creation of a healthy workplace.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

• Identify and critically evaluate the key areas of strategic leader • Assess the importance of different types of leadership and the challenges to the strategic leader within different types of organisation • Identify ways in which managers can exercise leadership more effectively through the application of a variety of leadership styles • Critically analyse the why there are so few examples of strategic leadership and understand and overcome the dark side of leadership including defensive routines, dysfunctional leadership and organisational pathology

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

• Demonstrate and critique the linkages between organisational culture, strategic leadership and organisational change • Synthesise the main challenges to effective strategic leadership including the top management team and leader-follower relationship

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module will be taught using a range of methods including lectures, role-plays, psychological simulations, teamwork activities and presentations. Graduate attributes will be developed in the following ways: Knowledgeable: Students will gain a deep knowledge of leadership through lectures, role-plays, psychological simulations, teamwork activities and presentations; Proactive: Students are expected to be proactive in their own learning through independent study and self-directed learning; Responsible: Students will develop a sense of responsibility through class discussions on various ethical issues involved in leadership decisions; Collaborative: Students will be required to participate in class discussions and group work; Articulate: Students will become articulate in discussing leadership through the use of in-class discussions, presentations and written coursework
