Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module will introduce students to an international management simulation software package. Using this software students will make strategic, managerial and operational decisions in order to run a business, operating in multiple geographic areas, over a number of time periods. The business simulation will act as a capstone module that requires students to draw on, integrate and apply knowledge from the first two semesters of their programme in an experiential way while having to cope with planned and emergent uncertainty in the simulated environment. It will also provide students will the opportunity to assess and reflect on their potential strengths and weaknesses as a manager.

Syllabus:

Students will be informed on how simulation software will work, from accepting the decisions they make to run an international business, to providing them with the results of those decisions in the form of managerial reports. Students will assess a complex and uncertain international environmental context; develop an appropriate strategy; implement this business strategy by integrating decisions on finance, marketing, research & development, production, human resources and sustainability; interpret profit and loss, balance sheets, marketing and production reports to continually assess the effectiveness of their strategy and amend it as necessary; assess and report on their firm's performance and competitive positioning overall, and within the various geographic regions in which the business operates.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Analyse an uncertain and complex business situation. Develop a profitable and responsible business strategy. Draw conclusions about the actions of competing firms. Evaluate the effectiveness of their actions over the course of the simulation. Critique their own firm's competitive performance over the course of the simulation.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: N/A

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will use an international management simulation software package to get students to integrate and apply key concepts covered in the first two semesters of their programme. They will typically work in groups to analyse an existing business environment and develop a suitable business strategy for their company. As the simulation unfolds they will need to continually make decisions around key business functions to implement their strategy as well as needing to react to planned and unplanned events in the simulation. This provides students with a dynamic learning environment that is active and applied as well as technology-enhanced. As such it encourages agility as students respond to events, makes them responsible managers in getting them to make decisions that are sustainable in nature. They will develop the couragious attribute through considering innovative and enterprising ways to develop and modify a business strategy as well as being curious in the problem-solving activities that are a core aspect of the module.
