Prerequisite Modules:
Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
A solid theoretical foundation and the ability to critically analyse existing literature are fundamental to producing high-quality academic research.
This module is designed to:
• Develop the ability to conduct an independent and rigorous theoretical review on a chosen topic.
• Foster a critical and comprehensive evaluation of relevant literature.
• Enhance skills in reviewing, structuring, argumentation, and academic writing to support the successful completion of the Confirmation Paper.
Syllabus:
This component of the programme consists of a series of structured student-supervisor meetings focused on developing a high-quality theoretical review paper.
• The primary objective is to identify a relevant research area for secondary investigation and establish a clear plan for conducting and writing the Confirmation Paper.
• Students will engage in critical analysis of existing literature, refine their research focus, and synthesise key theoretical perspectives.
• The final output will be a 7,000-8,000-word state-of-the-art theoretical review, in a format suitable for publication. Emphasis will be placed on scholarly rigour, originality, and the development of a well-structured argument.
• Students will also be required to complete a viva voce (oral examination), where they will present and defend their confirmation paper before a panel of faculty members. This assessment will evaluate their depth of understanding, critical analysis, and ability to articulate and justify their research choices.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
• Critically evaluate a comprehensive body of relevant knowledge.
• Construct and justify theoretical arguments with clear organisation and logical coherence.
• Critically assess and draw well-supported conclusions from theoretical arguments.
• Produce a comprehensive report on a key theoretical area, demonstrating depth and clarity.
• Defend and justify arguments using appropriate theoretical and empirical evidence.
• Evaluate the significance and contribution of academic literature within a given field.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
• Demonstrate openness to critical feedback and a willingness to revise one's research perspective based on engagement with academic literature.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
The core teaching method is through one-on-one supervisory meetings, where students receive tailored guidance on their chosen topic.
• Supervisors provide feedback on drafts, suggest relevant literature, and help refine arguments and structure.
• Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning by independently reviewing and synthesising a body of theoretical knowledge.
• Workshops may be offered to cover key skills, such as literature search strategies, critical appraisal, and academic writing.
• A comprehensive Confirmation Paper Guidelines document is provided at the beginning of the academic year, outlining expectations, structure, and assessment criteria.
• Students receive coaching on how to present and defend their work during the viva voce, including handling questions and articulating their findings clearly.
The module contributes to the development of the UL Graduate Attributes as follows:
• Agile: The process of conducting a theoretical review requires adaptability and flexibility in approaching diverse sources, revising arguments, and responding to supervisory feedback. Students learn to be open-minded and independent in their academic inquiry and actions.
• Articulate: Writing the Confirmation Paper hones inter- and intra-personal skills, particularly in structuring and expressing complex ideas clearly and effectively. Collaboration with supervisors fosters empathy and strengthens communication skills.
• Responsible: The module emphasises ethical research practices, including proper citation, critical evaluation of sources, and academic integrity. It encourages a sense of professional responsibility in completing rigorous scholarly work.
• Curious: Students engage in problem-solving, critical thinking, and deep exploration of their chosen topic, fostering intellectual curiosity. The process involves questioning assumptions and seeking innovative perspectives, enhancing inquisitiveness and imagination.
• Courageous: Preparing and defending the Confirmation Paper in the viva voce requires resilience, confidence, and the ability to handle constructive criticism. Students demonstrate courage in tackling challenging topics and presenting transformative ideas.
