Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module offers a comprehensive exploration and analysis of contemporary management principles and practices within today's competitive and dynamic business environment. It integrates key management theories with real world business applications, enabling students to critically assess traditional management models and frameworks, offering sustainable and ethical solutions to complex, contemporary challenges.
Syllabus:
The module examines key topics such as the evolution of management and the main schools of management thought, environmental analysis, the nature and importance of planning and decision making in organisations, organisational structure, leadership, control and ethical practices. Students will investigate how emerging global trends, sustainability and digital innovations are reshaping managerial roles and organisational structures and practices.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Analyse the current business environment using the tools of competitive and environmental analysis, and in doing so formulate conclusions and recommendations about the nature of competition and appropriate business strategies in a sustainable manner
2. Assess historical approaches to management and assess similarities and differences between them, in terms of their contribution to effective managerial practice.
3. Critically evaluate the different theoretical approaches to each of the main functions of management, recognising that different approaches work in different situations.
4. Interpret differing environmental and organisational conditions and offer suitably aligned strategies for each of the main functions of management that the organisation requires in an ethical and sustainable manner.

The module will be delivered through a blend of lectures, tutorials, case studies, group discussions, and real-world projects supported by an online learning platform and private research. Graduate attributes will be developed in the following ways: Agile: Students are expected to be agile in their learning through independent study, self-directed learning and coursework; Articulate: Students will become articulate in expressing advice through the use of in-class discussions, presentations and written coursework; Courageous: Students will be required to participate openly in class discussions, and assessments that require them to step outside their comfort zone; Curious: Students will be encouraged to be curious in their acquisition of knowledge of through practical examples, coursework and in-class groupwork; Responsible: Students will develop a sense of responsibility through class discussions on various ethical and sustainable issues and challenges.
