Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

In today's fast-changing global environment, organisations face unprecedented complexity arising from interconnected technological, environmental, and social forces. Rapid digital innovation, evolving sustainability standards, and growing demands for ethical and inclusive leadership are reshaping the expectations placed on modern managers. Traditional management approaches are often insufficient to address these multidimensional challenges. Managing Complexity within Business is designed to equip students with the advanced knowledge and practical skills needed to navigate this complexity. The module fosters systems thinking, adaptive leadership, and the ability to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into core strategic decisions. Students will also develop critical capabilities in problem-solving, ethical reasoning, collaboration, and resilience--all essential qualities for leading in uncertain and dynamic contexts. Aligned with the programme's emphasis on developing professionally competent and socially responsible leaders, this module contributes to graduate attributes such as agility, curiosity, courage, and ethical awareness. It ensures that students are prepared to guide organisations through the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly complex and interdependent world.

Syllabus:

This module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of how to manage organisational complexity while contributing to sustainable and responsible business practices. Key themes and topics include: • Complexity and systems thinking: foundational concepts and their application to modern organisations • Global sustainability frameworks, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and principles of ESG reporting and governance • Emerging digital tools and innovations, such as carbon accounting, predictive analytics, and data-driven decision-making for sustainability and transparency • Ethical leadership and stakeholder engagement in global, culturally diverse contexts • Navigating "wicked problems" through adaptive, collaborative, and creative approaches to problem-solving • Organisational change and innovation: fostering resilience and agility in the face of uncertainty The module combines theoretical frameworks with practical application, encouraging students to analyse contemporary case studies and develop strategic responses to real-world challenges. Group-based projects and industry collaborations further deepen students' ability to lead in complex environments.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Managing Complexity within Business adopts an integrated, research-led, experiential approach to teaching and learning. Key elements of delivery include: • Interactive lectures and seminars, providing a foundation in both established theory and the latest thinking on complexity, sustainability, and ethical leadership • Practical workshops, enabling students to explore and apply digital tools and methodologies for managing complexity in organisational settings • Collaborative projects, consultancy assignments, and simulation-based learning, where students tackle real-world sustainability and leadership challenges in teams • Reflective journals and personal development activities, supporting alignment between academic learning, professional growth, and evolving career aspirations • Guest lectures from leading academics, industry experts, and practitioners, offering cutting-edge insights into emerging trends such as AI-driven governance, regenerative business models, and global sustainability initiatives The module is continually refreshed to incorporate recent research findings, new technologies, and best practices. Contemporary case studies illustrate both successful strategies and cautionary tales, helping students learn from real-world organisational experiences. Development of Graduate Attributes: Managing Complexity within Business is designed to nurture articulate, agile, courageous, curious, and responsible graduates. Students learn to communicate effectively by producing clear, concise, and compelling multimedia presentations and professional reports, enhancing both written and verbal articulation. Through problem-based learning and exposure to real-life organisational dilemmas, they gain the adaptability and independent thinking needed to thrive in ever-changing environments. By confronting issues that demand innovative and sometimes unconventional solutions, students develop the resilience and bravery to lead with confidence amid uncertainty. Self-directed exploration fosters curiosity and continuous learning, encouraging an ongoing engagement with new ideas, emerging technologies, and societal trends. Ethical and sustainable considerations are woven throughout all learning activities, instilling a strong sense of personal, social, and professional responsibility. This ensures graduates can navigate complex ethical terrains and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development efforts in their future careers.
