Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is designed to develop a critical, evidence-based understanding of strategic management in contemporary organisations. Considering the internal and external business environment along with the ethical, and societal challenges organisations face, it focuses on differentiating strategic management from management and aims to critically consider the ways in which theories of strategy are linked to organisational outcomes. The rationale for this module is to help students build both understanding and appreciation of the strategic management principles that can be used to guide organisations through challenges and change.

Syllabus:

The module covers contemporary strategic management concepts in key areas such as: Internal and external environmental analysis, resourced based view of the firm; ambidexterity and dynamic capabilities; red and blue ocean strategy, strategic leadership and change management; mergers, acquisitions and alliances; stakeholders and governance; sustainability and ethics.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - Evaluate key contemporary issues and debates for the theory and practice of strategic management as a field of study - Critically assess the risk of changes in the internal and external macro environment to an organisation's strategy. - Review and critique the theories and application in the practice of competitive advantage.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - Develop an awareness of the ambiguity and paradox inherent in managing strategically. - Value the role of critical thinking and its contribution to their current and future impact on their organisation and the broader society.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Teaching methods will include lectures, audio-visual resources, short case studies and in-classroom discussions. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in class discussions to enhance learning, critical thinking and confidence. Student graduate attributes will be developed in the following ways: Collaborative: Students will enhance their collaboration skills through case study analysis and team-based problem-solving assignments; Responsible and Curious: Through critically examining live case studies, such as those in public healthcare, students will cultivate a sense of responsibility and curiosity while developing practical solutions to real-world ethical challenges; Agile: Students will foster agility in theory application by engaging in peer interactions and independent, self-directed learning.; Articulate: Students will improve their articulation skills through presentations, classroom discussions, and written assignments.
