Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module explores the core concepts and theories of project management science and relates them to the emerging phenomenon of programme management. It provides students with a deepened understanding of project and programme related principles and associated strategic and operational frameworks, and how they might be integrated within a variety of organisational settings. This module provides the opportunity to explore new and developing theories that are useful in explaining project related phenomena within a variety of empirical settings.

Syllabus:

Temporary organising, systems theory, managing change through projects and programmes, portfolio management and the PMO, project and programme management standards, project and programme management processes and lifecycles, project and programme management knowledge areas, organisational learning and project and programme management theories and maturity/capability.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Develop an awareness of projects and programmes as temporary organisations Acquire knowledge of systems theory and thinking in the management of projects and programmes Examine the respective roles of projects, programmes and the PMO in delivering beneficial change Acquire a critical awareness of project and programme management Bodies of Knowledge and how they are used Analyse project and programme management processes and lifecycles and develop an awareness of their application and limitations Compare and contrast the knowledge areas within project and programme management and evaluate the most appropriate for any given context Critically evaluate frameworks for assessing project and programme management performance at an organisational level Appraise project and programme situations and apply appropriate tools, techniques and management processes to selected business problems

Resolve programme level issues and challenges that arise in organisational change programmes Develop organisational success criteria and integrate within programme management frameworks and processes.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Synchronous and asynchronous methods will be used to deliver the module. This module will make extensive use of case examples, group assignment work and group presentations. They will have access to all materials through a Learner Management system, specifically written for the remote learner. Students will be expected to participate in on-line interactions and engage with fellow learners and tutors through this system, feedback on their learning will be provided on an ongoing basis and students will be able to track their own personal development throughout the programme
