Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This In Company Project provides students with the opportunity to conduct empirical investigations, using value management as a modelling and decision making framework, through the medium of projects and programmes in a live organisational setting. Under faculty supervision, each team of students investigate a problem of strategic importance to the organisation and reports its recommendations at the end of the exercise to supervising faculty and to the sponsoring organisation. Each team is expected to follow a job plan consisting of the following phases: information gathering, function analysis, analysis, creativity, evaluation, development and presentation. Following completion of the exercise, students produce a detailed group report on the application of the framework to the problem in question and an individual report written as a reflective journal. This is a non-repeatable module

Syllabus:

Students are requested to identify a project within their organisation that can be used to carry out a comprehensive value management exercise. Working in small groups, the team will review the charter for the project together with the project objectives, constraints, specification and any other project information available. They will work with the project team and conduct a full 4-day workshop in value management to develop value proposals for implementation by the project team

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module, students will be able to: Identify the key components of the value management and risk management processes; Develop value objectives for projects and programmes using inputs from project stakeholders; Critically evaluate options within programmes to deliver value to stakeholders; Model programme uncertainty and develop value proposal implementation plans; Recommend value proposals to project sponsors through a formal presentation and report; Relate value and risk management frameworks to other programme settings

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Working in small groups within companies, students will cover the syllabus. Students will be requested to sponsor a programme or project within their organisation that can be used to carry out a comprehensive value management investigation. The team will review the charter for the project along with objectives, constraints, and specification and any other project information available. They will work with the project team and conduct a full 4-day workshop in value management to develop value proposals for implementation by the organisation. The exercise shall provide specific recommendations and highlight the reasons behind them with a full evaluation of the benefits the proposals will provide to the organisation. The study group will present their proposals to management on the final day of the workshop, and produce a detailed report outlining their findings. The student will also record their own personal learning experiences over the course of the exercise, and submit a short account of the key learnings encountered, during the preparation for the workshop, the workshop and post-workshop stages. It is expected that these reflections will inform students wishing to conduct similar investigations in a variety of organisation settings.
