Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
Carrying out applied research in project management is beneficial as it provides the candidate the opportunity to explore project management as a discipline and use the latest research in a specific area to address real situations that arise on projects. In most cases the experienced practitioner will be in a position to deliver benefits both to the Centre for Project Management and to Industry by conducting research into issues and phenomena that arise on projects.
The research component of the MSc is designed to develop conceptual, methodological and analytical skills among candidates. Building on their research proposal, originally developed in the Research Methods Module, candidates are assigned to a research supervisor who will mentor them in the development, execution and completion of their research paper.
A minimum C3 grade is required on this module.
Syllabus:
This component of the programme will be delivered through a combination of group and individual student-supervisory meetings. The candidate will be expected to self-manage their own time and prioritise their activities in relation to planning and organising their research.
They will work autonomously, exercising initiative and personal responsibility for the achievement of their stated research objectives.In addition a number of short workshops aimed at developing students academic writing skills will be provided, in consultation with the Centre for Teaching and Learning.

Identify and justify a research gap and frame a research question;
Develop a comprehensive and critical comprehension of the body of knowledge within a chosen research area;

Choose and apply methodology appropriate to the research question;
Conduct empirical work using appropriate methodologies and ethical frameworks;
Analyse and interpret data;
Synthesise and consolidate the research into critical findings, appropriate conclusions and key learnings for industry practitioners

They will work autonomously, exercising initiative and personal responsibility for the achievement of their stated research objectives.
