MATHEMATICAL LABORATORY
Year Last Offered:
2025/6
Hours Per Week:
Grading Type:

Prerequisite Modules:
Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
To introduce students to a symbolic algebra package (Maple) as a mathematical problem-solving tool.
Syllabus:
[Using a symbolic algebra package (MAPLE) for the analysis and solution of simple
mathematical models.] Systematic approach to scientific problem-solving.
Extensive use will be made of case studies and assessment will be largely project
based.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Affective (Attitudes and Values)
None
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
None at all
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
The module will be taught on a hands-on basis. The students will each have a PC running Maple and will be assigned tasks during classroom sessions. The lecture material is available on-line and is in the form of interactive Maple worksheets. Classroom sessions will be workshops rather than lectures.
Research Findings Incorporated in to the Syllabus (If Relevant):
Not relevant for an introductory module.
