Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This is the first semester of the fourth year project. The project should synthesise many of the major concepts and ideas encountered in earlier taught modules. It should also bring the student beyond the experience of learning by course-work to the brink of learning by research. While originial work is not a sine qua non, it should be encouraged to every possible extent.

Syllabus:

The student in the first semester will undertake a programme of reading and research into the project, which will consist of a substantial problem or review in mathematics, computing, statistics, finance or cognate areas. The project will normally commence with a literature review. The main part of the project may require the use of computers or some calculations by hand.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

In the first semester, the student will develop skills, perhaps by working on problems of a simpler nature than the full problems encountered in the overall project, that are necessary for the completion of the proejct as a whole. By the end of the first semester the student can explain in detail the nature of the project, all early accomplishments and ideas for work to be undetaken in the second semester and should be aware of the outstanding work that is required to bring the project to its completion.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

The student should be able to present the project in its early stages to peers and make a convincing argument for any assumptions or early conclusions that have been made to date.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

Student will be able to communicate effectively through written document, electronic and oral presentations the problems and accomplishments of the project.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Student undertakes independent work under the regular supervision of a supervisor, with whom meetings should occur at least weekly. As work commences on the main body of the project, the student will formally and regularly write up what has been learned and all early accomplishments. By the end of the semester, this should form the basis for a document of approximately 20 pages, which will be submitted to the first and second readers as an interim report. The first semester grade will mainly be based on this report. A brief presentation may also be required.

Research Findings Incorporated in to the Syllabus (If Relevant):

If appropriate, the student should be exposed to recent research findings and should be encouraged to develop and work on ideas of their own on these. Certain projects may be amenable to later continuation as Masters theses.
