Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This is the second semester of the fourth year project. The project should synthesise many of the major concepts and ideas encountered in earlier taught modules. It should also bring the student beyond the experience of learning by course-work to the brink of learning by research. While original work is not a sine qua non, it should be encouraged to every possible extent. It should culminate in a comprehensive written report and an oral presentation by the student.

Syllabus:

From the start of the semester, the student should be well into the main work of the project and should, at an early stage, start the process of bringing together the results of the project and start drawing conclusions. The main work of the project should be completed early in the semester and the process of writing the final written report should commence. This should consist of a substantial document, written to a professional standard, in accordance with departmental regulations.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

The student will have an in-depth understanding of the full project and will have undertaken a substantial piece of work in the implementation of the goals of project. The student can explain in detail, in precise and coherent fashion, the full nature of the project, all achievements and conclusions and propose possible ideas for work that could be undetaken beyond the scope of project.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

The student should be able to present the project in its totality to peers and professionals, make convincing arguments for its assumptions and conclusions and make serious proposals about possible extensions of the project.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

Student will be able to communicate effectively through written document, electronic and oral presentations the problems, accomplishments and conclusions of the project.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The student continues independent work under the supervision of the first reader. At the end of the semester, a final report, written to a professional standard in compliance with Departmental regulations, is presented to the supervisor and second reader and this forms the basis for a major part of the module grade (reached in agreement with the second reader). There is also an oral presentation, which may be followed by questions on the project, that contributes to part of the grade.

Research Findings Incorporated in to the Syllabus (If Relevant):

If appropriate, the student should be exposed to recent research findings and should be encouraged to develop and work on ideas of their own on these. Certain projects may be amenable to later continuation as Masters theses.
