Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module will introduce students to aspects of sound and movement from around the world, questioning the nature of what is 'World Music and Dance' in the 21st century digital age.

Syllabus:

This module will examine a selection of music and dance expressions from diverse places round the globe. Students will study the music and dance in the context of 'world music' with a specific focus on India, England, Scandinavia , West Africa, Scotland, Brittany, Galicia, North America and Indonesia .This module will be assessed through course-work and exam.

• Identify and discuss specific regional/national/ethnic musics and dance in terms of history, style, function, and meaning • Explore, analyze and critically engage with the relevant academic literature • Identify and discuss specific regional/national/ethnic musics in terms of history, style, function, and meaning

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

• Show a greater understanding and appreciation of 'World' music and dance in relation to socio-cultural and political identities • Demonstrate a greater awareness of the diversity of forms and sounds of various world and traditional musics.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

• Develop critical listening and viewing skills for engaging with less familiar music and dance traditions.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be taught through a mixture of lectures, tutorials and performance based laboratories. It will have traditional academic outcomes supplemented by an arts practice approach, giving the subject area an embodied relevance. As such this module has UL graduate attributes at it's core, focusing on knowledge based outputs supplemented with a embodied experience rooted in collaborative creative practice. Students will be able to articulate their understanding of the contemporary concept of world music and dance in a culturally engaged and responsible manner.
