Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is designed to enable music and dance students to develop awareness and understanding of the impact of the arts on health and well-being. The module aims to develop well-rounded music and dance graduates who are aware of the role of the arts in various contexts (such as hospital, community healthcare and mental health) and the impact of their own health and well-being on their own arts performance. The role of arts in society will be examined as well as the wide variety of approaches to creative engagement and the value of art.

Syllabus:

In this module students will develop their knowledge of the interaction of arts, health and well-being. Students will discuss, describe and critically reflect on the ways theorists and researchers have considered social, psychological, physical and behavioural aspects of the arts and to discuss the role of the arts in society and the value of art. By the end of the module students will be able to describe aspects of physiological responses to music; the social and cultural context of music and dance; the importance of listening skills, arts and health practice.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Students will be able to summarise literature, engage in debate about issues of health, well-being and the arts (written and oral) and critically examine examples of arts and health practice. Students will be able to identify arts and health practice in many contexts. Students will be able to describe the benefits of arts on health and well-being and limitations in current research.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Students will be able to demonstrate the role of the arts for vulnerable populations (for example, mental health services; migration services; community health contexts, hospitals) and to explore their response to this work. Students will be able to question their own attitudes to health and well-being and will learn skills of self-reflection in response to examples of arts and health work.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Teaching will consist primarily of lectures and classroom based seminars. In this context they will engage current literature in the fields of arts and health, arts therapies. They will also be presented with examples of current practice utilising media such as film, audio, guest presenters). They will also engage experiential exercises - for example, art therapy experiential session, music therapy experiential session, mindfulness meditation or yoga, dance and health session. These components will embody many of the graduate attributes promoted by the University - in particular those that are knowledgeable, proactive, creative, responsible, collaborative, articulate.
