Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
To familiarize students with the varieties of music-culture systems found throughout the world through readings and audio-visual sources as well as practical experience of music making with invited master teachers.
Syllabus:
Taking a survey approach, the class will consider a musical idiom from each of the world's nine major music-culture areas. Students will investigate some aspect of music-culture in one of these areas in more depth, writing a 4000 word essay.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
1. Describe the major musical characteristics of idioms from each of the world's 9 major music-culture areas.
2. To demonstrate an aesthetically informed ear and recognise the affective power of these musics.
3. Demonstarte an understanding of the characteristics of their native musical idioms more clearly.
4. Demonstrate an understanding and awareness of diverse music-culture traditions
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
1. Challenge ethnocentricity in research and learnign approaches
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
Illustrate an understanding through practice of different aesthetics in selected music cultures.
