Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module is focussed on psychodynamic and psychosocial approaches within music therapy practice including the following areas: adults in mental health contexts, medical contexts and community work, music therapy in addressing the needs of medical patients.
Syllabus:
Through a series of expert lectures and self study, students will develop an understanding of psychodynamic and psychosocial approaches within music therapy practice. Core theoretical frames to inform family work, and work with adults in mental health contexts, medical contexts and community work will be presented. Adult mental disorders û major diagnostic categories eg Schizophrenia, Depression and Bi-Polar disorder û will be covered. The role of music therapy in addressing the needs of medical patients will be presented. Students will attend a weekly experiential group. Clinical improvisation skills will be extended.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
1. Synthesise materials from reading and lectures in order to identify and describe the common symptoms of major mental disorders in adults
2. Describe the application of music therapy to address the needs of adults who have mental disorders
3. Demonstrate an understanding the manifestations of AlzheimerÆs Disease (AD) and other dementias, and the role of music therapy in attending to the needs of people with AD
4. Discuss issues arising in provision of music therapy in acute medical contexts to patients with a range of conditions
5. Review and critique ways in which improvisational group music therapy is applicable in a range of therapeutic contexts
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
1. Reflect on experiences of people with severe enduring mental disorders and their families
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
1. Continue individual development of skills and capacities in clinical improvisation; vocal and keyboard
2. Demonstrate skills of sight reading, transposition and accompaniment
