Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

For students to develop a music therapy research from idea to ethical clearance stage.

Syllabus:

Development of research from idea through to ethical clearance. Students will examine issues in research design including choice of data collection methods and methods to analyse data. Students will consider issues around ethics in research, including informed consent, management of sensitive materials, and the role of the researcher in managing participation.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

1. Synthesise materials from readings and lectures to develop an understanding of Evidence Based Practice 2. Demonstrate skills in choosing research designs to fit research questions 3. Critically evaluate the underlying bases for research approaches in music therapy; ontology, epistemology, and method 4. Develop competence in using research terminology correctly; statistical significance, comparative methods, RCTs etc

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

1. Reflect on issues of ethical importance; informed consent, data protection, minimisation of harm, children and vulnerable adults as research participants

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

1. Develop and present a self-generated research design and respond to questions in a small group setting
