Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

To develop music therapy skills in individual and group therapy contexts and to develop skills for reflective practice. Also aims at facilitating students to understand and integrate personal, therapeutic and literature based information about dynamic work as a music therapy practitioner.

Syllabus:

An understanding of the ways in which improvised music can be used in individual work and group work within a psychodynamic orientation will be developed. Verbal, non-verbal and musical skills needed in therapeutic relationships within music therapy will be identified and explored with students giving consideration to their own strengths and weaknesses in the further development of these skills.

1. Describe and discuss the features of some of the main psychotherapeutic approaches used in music therapy 2. Define and discuss distinctions between psychodynamic terms such as transference, countertransference, projection, holding and containment

1. Reflect on strengths and weaknesses as a group therapy leader/co-leader

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Students will take part in role plays, class discussions, will lead the class in experiential exercises as part of gaining a range of skills appropriate to therapeutic work with individuals and groups. Integration of materials is valued in this program. Therefore, experiences on placement, ways of participating in the classes, coping with issues in learning and integrating new material and the overall experience of preparing to be a music therapy practitioner is an important focus. Weekly experiential group also.
