Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The rationale and purpose of this module is to further develop performance skills through specialist vocal training. Over the module, students will broaden their repertoire within vocal ritual traditions, such as Gregorian plainchant, Irish traditional song, among others. They will be encouraged to develop healthy vocal technique, stylistically appropriate to the given repertoire. Where appropriate, skills in ensemble singing will be introduced.

Syllabus:

This module will develop practical vocal instruction through the provision of specialist vocal training, appropriate to the idiomatic performance of a range of vocal repertoires including Western plainchant, Irish traditional religious song, aspects of the Western choral tradition and selected world ritual vocal repertoires. Tuition will include solo vocal technique and repertoire classes, instruction in schola and ensemble singing, conducting and facilitating ensemble performance, vocal accompaniment as appropriate to specialist repertoires, sight-signing and aural training, as well as the facilitation of an independently selected programme of performance.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1 Apply, with greater independence, an understanding of medieval chant, its modality and notation to the performance of Western plainchant. 2 Sight-sing from certain medieval notations/scripts with some degree of proficiency.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1 Value the different natures of transmission of vocal repertoire, through living oral communities and historic sources. 2 Embrace different practices of historically-informed chant performance

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1 Embody the appropriate technique and skill for specific vocal repertoires. 2 Perform an expanded repertoire of chants and songs from Western plainchant and other ritual vocal repertoires.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Laboratory classes in somatic technique, vocal repertoire, solo and ensemble performance and one-to-one vocal training. Learnign experiences to include advanced development of technique, repertoire and style
