Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The aim of this module is for students to discover and learn about arts role in health and well-being throughout history and the use of contemporary arts practices in healthcare contexts. Students will further have the opportunity to develop knowledge of the contemporary application of creative arts therapies in healthcare. The module ultimately provides a rich foundation of theoretical knowledge on which to base a developing understanding of the role of music therapy in healthcare practice in society today. This module broadly covers the major theoretical frameworks in which music therapy is practiced in health care settings and the research in the field. This module will provide the beginner researcher with the tools, knowledge and investigative attitude required to conduct research in their preferred area of interest. Research traditions and theoretical frameworks from which they emerge will be reviewed. Critical thinking of published literature will be emphasised. Topics related to research design, including methods and protocols of data collection, data analysis, ethical conduct, managing sensitive materials, role of the researcher, and informed consent will be examined.

Syllabus:

Throughout history music, as well as other arts-based mediums, have been used in rituals, healing practices, therapies, cultural symbolism and as an everyday personal resource. The aim of this module is for students to discover and learn about arts role in health and well-being throughout history and be aware of contemporary research and practice in the field. The course ultimately provides a rich foundation of theoretical knowledge on which to base a developing understanding of the role of music therapy in healthcare practice in society today. This includes the role of technologies and applications suitable for arts in health practice. This module broadly covers the major theoretical frameworks in which music therapy is practiced in health care settings, an overview of arts and health field of practice and key research skills. The module provides beginner researcher with the tools, knowledge and investigative attitude required to conduct research in their preferred area of interest. Research traditions and theoretical frameworks from which they emerge will be reviewed. Critical thinking of published literature will be emphasised. Topics related to research design, including methods and protocols of data collection, data analysis, ethical conduct, managing sensitive materials, role of the researcher, and informed consent will be examined.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Demonstrate understanding of a range of music therapy approaches to practice and research Articulate how music is an everyday resource across the lifespan. Demonstrate knowledge about the main theoretical frameworks in which music therapy is practiced and a working definition of music therapy. Demonstrate literature review skills and an understanding of critical thinking, research traditions and methods Explain concepts and principles relating to using media and assistive technology in music therapy clinical contexts. Demonstrate understanding of issues of music therapy practice relating to media and assistive technology such as consent, ethical concerns, autonomy and rights of ownership Compare, contrast and use media and assistive technologies available for clinical therapy

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Discuss and explain the ethical responsibilities of the arts and health researcher and practitioner Present a critique of the contribution of the aesthetic, symbolic, nonverbal components of music/the arts in health.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Demonstrate knowledge of music technology(practical hands on demonstration) and library search skills

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module is taught through a combination of recorded lectures, online resources, self directed learning and group work to develop the skills required of a professional music therapist. Recent developments in online teaching have resulted in live debate, discussion and interactive learning with didactic teaching and reading delivered as online independent learning activities. Group work and presentation of findings is emphasised to encourage team bonding in semester 1 and development of practical presentation and group skills required for working life. Recent evaluations of the programme have led to development of these assignments, learning styles and delivery models.
