Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The aim of the module is to critically evaluate the role of the RNID in supporting individuals in challenging behavioural or mental health situations in the context of current attitudes policies and practices

Syllabus:

Human behaviour, adaptive and maladaptive responses. Positive Behaviour Support. Assessment of functional communication e.g. aggressive violent and self-injurious behaviours. Supporting individuals to communicate effectively e.g. Pics for Pecs. Behavioural therapies. Dual diagnosis, e.g. phobias, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, psychosexual disorders, percpetual and mood disorders, schizophrenia, depression. Attention deficit disorders with or without hyperactivity. Interventions e.g. cognitive therapies, risk management, use of restrictive practices, legal and ethical decision making, applied pharmacology. Multi-element plans in the context of person-centred planning and nursing process. Legislation including capacity assessment and legislation pertaining to intellectual disability nursing practice across the life span continuum. Statutory regulations governing the rights and supports necessary to provide effective and compassionate care for a person with an intellectual disability, including the giving and refusing of consent to intervention and of a person's developmental and legal capacity. Person centred nursing skills Functional behavioural assessment Mental health assessment incorporating use of mental health assessment tools Practice assessment and management of the dynamics of risk. Behavioural support strategies (positive behaviour support plans) De-escalation techniques Cognitive behavioural therapy Relaxation techniques

(Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis) Discuss the role of the nurse in facilitating assessment, planning interventions and evaluations when supporting the individual with an intellectual disability and behaviour/mental health difficulties Critically evaluate current approaches utilised by nurses in the care of the person with an intellectual disability who presents with behaviour problems/mental health difficulties

(Attitudes and Values) Demonstrate a belief in the importance of implementing a climate of respect and dignity for each individual with an intellectual disability and associated behavioural/mental health difficulties Recognise and respond therapeutically to the complex behaviour that people with an intellectual disability may use as a means of communication.

(Physical Skills) Demonstrate clinical skills essential for nursing practice. Demonstrate and apply clinical skills relevant to persons in challenging behavioural or mental health situations

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Experience The module will be taught through a combination of lectures and clinical skills laboratories that engage with selected primary texts and supplemented by secondary material (assigned, recommended and/or sourced by students). Lectures will combine contextualisation with close reading, illustrated, where necessary, by visual and audio material. Clinical skills laboratories will have an emphasis on participative group-work, and focus on exploring values, attitudes and understanding of disability. Research Appreciate current evidence based literature and its relevance to nursing practice and incorporate relevant national and international health policy.
