Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module will develop students understanding of research and evidence informing healthcare practice.

Syllabus:

Research skills development; cognitive and practical. Research terminology; processes and approaches; research methodology and methods. Systematic searching, hierarchy of evidence. Data extraction techniques; reviewing evidence; ethical principles and research integrity. Working with evidence and evidence based practice and translating evidence and research into practice.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Demonstrate an understanding of research principles and processes underpinning evidence based practice. Demonstrate ability to search systematically relevant databases and sources of evidence. Utilise critical thinking skills in exploring evidence based literature.

Appreciate how research informs personal and practice development. Demonstrate an appreciation of the ethical principles underpinning research integrity.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module fosters an engaged learning environment through a variety of learning and teaching strategies e.g. lectures, discussions, group work, self-directed learning, independent learning, recommended reading, reflection, enquiry/problem based learning. This module develops the UL graduate attributes and encourages commitment to providing quality care through understanding of research. Students will be supported to become responsible and articulate in working with evidence to support their practice. This module will utilise evidence based literature and focus on developing the ability to systematically identify, search, review, critique and evaluate relevant literature.
