Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

To introduce the concepts of health, health education and health promotion to nursing and midwifery students and provide the necessary foundations to develop competence in the promotion of health.

Syllabus:

Concepts of health and wellbeing, illness, disease and disability. Determinants of and influences upon health. Health inequalities, protection and welfare of vulnerable groups. Measuring health and identifying health care needs. Health strategies and policies. Empowerment, advocacy, partnership working, health literacy, ethical issues. Health education, health promotion, public health, screening and preventative medicine. Health promotion models and approaches. Health needs of diverse groups and different cultures. The role of the nurse/midwife in promoting health and supporting healthier life choices across the health spectrum. Settings approach to health promotion e.g. communities, work place, schools, hospitals.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Discuss the concepts of health, health education, and health promotion. Describe the role of the nurse and midwife as a health promoter across a variety of settings. Discuss the influence of national and international health strategies on health.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Appreciate the complex nature of health as a concept and the various determinants of health. Value the centrality of partnership working in health promotion.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Students will participate in the learning environment through engagement in teaching and learning strategies e.g. lectures, discussions, group work, self-directed learning, recommended reading, reflection, seminars, small group teaching, observation, case scenarios, role-play, use of audio-visual aids. Students will also be expected to engage in self-directed study to supplement their learning. As a result of gaining an understanding of the importance of the concepts of health education and health promotion in nursing and midwifery the module aims to develop UL graduate attributes. Students will become knowledgeable, articulate and more collaborative in their approach to the promotion of health education and health promotion with patients/clients and with members of the health care team. Students will be encouraged to access relevant evidence based literature to inform health education and health promotion in nursing and midwifery practice which will incorporate national and international health policy.
