Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The aim of this module is to provide students with a foundation for becoming a lifelong reflective learner and critical thinking practitioner. It will support student's integration into third level environment and assist in learning how to balance university commitments and life.

Syllabus:

Transition to third level learning and scholarship. Maximising learning styles and taking a proactive approach to individual learning, developing emotional intelligence and managing self and wellbeing. Developing verbal, digital and academic writing skills. Library, information and communication technology. Study and time management skills. Academic integrity. Searching and finding appropriate evidence, developing critical thinking skills, using evidence in practice, database, information and reference management. Collaborative learning. Reflective practice as a strategy for personal and professional development.

Learning Outcomes:

Demonstrate an ability to convey ideas through written, verbal and digital communication at individual and collaborative levels. Discuss the principles underpinning academic study in connecting personal and professional development. Recognise engagement in learning as a foundation towards becoming a reflective learner and practitioner.

Demonstrate an appreciation of the value of self-care as a foundation for personal and professional development. Demonstrate a proactive commitment to engaging in lifelong learning within university, community and practice.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be facilitated through a variety of learning and teaching strategies e.g. lectures, discussions, group work, self-directed learning, independent learning; recommended reading and reflection. The module fosters the development of UL graduate attributes through promoting development of engaging, reflective, critical, creative and proactive approaches to learning. Support and advice will be provided to students to maximise individual responsibility and potential within a collaborative learning environment. Constructive feedback to students will assist them in identifying and articulating future learning needs and actions, thus fostering a self and peer approach in managing own learning and development. Reference to key publications that informs engaged learning will be incorporated.
