Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
Midwifery is a practice-based profession whereby knowledge is both generated from and applied to practice. This is the second of two practicum placements during year 2 of the programme whereby students are required to meet the five principles on competence for advanced midwifery practice (NMBI 2018). This module facilitates the development of students' clinical knowledge and practice at an advanced level within their specific area of practice. This module is M-Graded to the Advanced Practice Clinical Practicum (Midwifery) 1.This enables students to pursue in-depth, directed and supported learning in advanced midwifery practice demonstrating core competences based on the five principles for advanced midwifery practice as stipulated by NMBI Advanced Practice (Midwifery) Standards and Requirements (2018).
Syllabus:
Specific knowledge and clinical skills requirements for advanced midwifery practice competencies will be negotiated on an individual practice area basis with the student, their preceptor/mentor and their employer/manager within the framework. This module includes a theoretical and practical element (275 hours) which, facilitates the consolidation, integration and application of theory within practice.

At the end of this module students will be able to:
Use evidence-based frameworks, to synthesise and interpret assessment information to identify normal, subnormal and at-risk states of health.
Determine the timely use of diagnostic investigations to inform clinical decision making when planning, delivering and evaluating person centred care.
Actively consider access, cost, clinical effectiveness when planning, delivering and evaluating care.
Apply knowledge of therapeutic interventions including pharmacological and non-pharmacological nursing interventions relevant to their advanced practice area.
Incorporate effective leadership and communication skills when interacting with inter-professional health care teams in the development, implementation and evaluation of care and services in their area of practice.

At the end of this module students will be able to:
Demonstrate an appreciation of and promote women-centred choices within health care.
Critically reflect on their own and others' learning and practice.
Maximise opportunities to educate, mentor, role model and facilitate clinical supervision, on-going reflection, and engagement in continuous professional development.
Uphold the professional values and standards as laid out in the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics (NMBI 2014 ) and the Practice Standards for Midwives (2015) supported by the University of Limerick Code of Conduct.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
At the end of this module students will be able to:
Integrate relevant knowledge and skills in the conduction of a comprehensive holistic assessment of patients/clients, and manage identified issues/needs at an advanced level within their practice area (or identified scope of practice).
Evaluate the provision of care and services pertaining to their area of practice, and reflect on feedback received to identify gaps in provision of care and services pertaining to area of practice.
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
The practical (275 hours) elements, completed by students as part of their normal working hours is a requirement to complete an Advanced Practice (Midwifery) Level 9 Programme. Students are required to demonstrate knowledge, competencies and clinical skills for advanced practice in midwifery relevant to the specific practice area of the student. Specific knowledge and skills requirements will be negotiated on an individual practice area basis with the student their clinical supervisor and their employer/midwife manager. The structures and records for the attainment of competencies and clinical skills and completion of clinical assessment documentation are detailed in the Competency Booklet. The major element of the programme will be substantial hours on clinical placement with supervision (as agreed under the site declaration form).
