The rationale for this module is to focus on introducing and engaging students in the theoretical underpinnings of practice based enquiry and the development of practice theories. The purpose of which is to facilitate learning and support practitioners to respond and contribute to on-going changes, reform and challenges in healthcare environment.

Theoretical underpinnings of practice enquiry and the development of practice theories. Frameworks for practice enquiry including, participatory research, public/patient involvement and complex intervention frameworks. Examining practice through critical reflection to identify research questions. Finding, appraising and synthesising evidence as part of practice enquiry. Strategies for developing, testing, evaluating and implementing changes in practice. Research integrity in practice enquiry.

Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Critically discuss the theoretical underpinnings of practice based enquiry. Critically review the identified frameworks for practice based enquiry. Critically reflect on an aspect of practice and identify potential research questions. Apply an identified framework to a practice based enquiry topic. Demonstrate the ability to effectively search for the evidence underpinning the topic for practice enquiry. Prepare a practice enquiry research protocol for submission to an ethics committee. Evaluate various sources of information and evidence available and critically appraise their value.

This module will provide a range of activities and resources that will help participants to develop an understanding of translational research. This module will be delivered through on and off campus activities through the virtual learning environment (BRIGHTSPACE). During this module, participants will work through course materials and readings and undertake directed learning activities online. Teaching contact sessions will comprise of interactive lectures and small group work allowing participants to reflect on and consolidate ideas and thoughts relating safety and risk when working with complex cases.. This approach combines educational methods that encourage application to practice through self-directed learning, reflection on personal experience, critical thinking and access to extensive online resources. Online discussion forums will enable students to engage in collaborative and interactive learning. This learning environment will stimulate students to be knowledgeable, proactive, creative, collaborative, articulate and responsible in line with the attributes required of graduates of the University of Limerick. Teaching and learning will include such methods as, lectures, tutorials, discussions, group work, self-directed learning, recommended reading, reflection, seminars, peer presentations, small group teaching, enquiry based learning, practical demonstration, observation, case scenarios, role-play, workshops, audiovisual sessions. The module is based on current best practice guidelines for research, incorporating relevant national and international health policy and will address changing policy or best practice guidelines when published.
