Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
The module provides further clinical practicum opportunity for students to experience practice in a variety of settings and to allow students gain a broad understanding of prescribing practice and interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary team working. The focus of the clinical practicum is the application of theory to practice and the utilisation of evidence to enhance nurse/midwife prescribing practice, while developing nurse/midwife prescribing competencies. The purpose of the module is to enable the student to achieve the programme learning outcomes and develop the competencies essential for eligibility for registration as a nurse/midwife prescriber.
Syllabus:
During clinical practice students will gain experience in nurse/midwife prescribing and integrate theory from the programme within the nursing/midwifery setting. The learner will complete competencies and reflect on decision-making skills essential to nurse/midwife practice and development as a prescriber. There must be confirmation from a medical practitioner of medical supervision of the learner nurse/midwife prescriber and agreement to provide the required term of supervised practice.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Apply principles of holistic care to the role of the nurse/midwife prescriber in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care.
Determine effective communication processes involved in safe medication management.
Utilise reflective practice, problem solving and clinical decision-making techniques in relation to the prescribing of medicinal products.
Evaluate practice and apply knowledge and skills to prescribing practice within the framework of accountability and responsibility in relation to prescribing.
Analyse the role to the multidisciplinary team in the supply, prescribing and administration of medicinal products.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an appreciation of the scope of practice of the nurse/midwife prescriber.
Behave in a professional manner upholding the professional code of conduct.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate development of competence across the domains of competence for nurse/midwife prescribers.
Skillfully perform assessment of patient/client to include history taking and physical examination.
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Teaching and learning will include such methods as mentorship, practicing as a member of the multidisciplinary team, demonstration, clinically based tutorials, ward reports and care plans, log books, self-directed learning, reflection, multidisciplinary team meetings and ward rounds, discussion and group work.
Adult learning theories underpin the module, with a focus on active engagement, social constructivism and self-directed learning, enabling students to become knowledgeable responsible, articulate, proactive, creative and collaborative university graduates.
