Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module maintains its current rationale and purpose and its position within the new curriculum.
The total hours scheduled for this module will be 66 hours (scheduled as 6 hours per week including over 11 weeks starting 1 week early
Tutorial spaces x4 3 hours for weeks 2,7,10,12).
Syllabus:
For students to develop their knowledge of the Canadian Model of Occupational Performance (CMOP) and Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM); the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) Irish health/welfare policy and history - mental health services; human occupation in relation to psychosocial needs of individuals with anxiety, depression and substance misuse; the application of theories of stress, coping, adjustment and loss in the practice of Occupational Therapy.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
1. Student will demonstrate knowledge of psychosocial needs of individuals.
2. Student will interpret and critique the current theories relating to stress, adaptation, loss and bereavement for individuals and communities.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
1. Student will value the contributions of peers in working together.
2. Student will value the contribution occupational therapy can make to issues of health and well-being.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
1. Student will review Irish Health and Welfare policy and its relationship to the development of mental health services and occupational therapy.
2. Student will assess individual's occupational performance needs as a result of psychosocial problems.
3. Student will plan, implement and evaluate appropriate intervention to meet identified individual occupational needs.
4. Student will evaluate environments in relation to supporting occupation.
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This module is delivered via lectures and seminars. The Vision for Change and The Mental Health Act have had an impact on the delivery of services for those living with mental health issues. Additionally research and theory in occupational science have broadened the perspectives and the importance of meaningful occupation in maintaining positive mental health and wellbeing This is supported by involvement from relevant community organizations.
