Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

In accordance with the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, students on professional practice programmes are required to complete a minimum of 1000 hours of practice education to a satisfactory level. The aim of the module is to which introduce students to the Occupational Therapy role and therapeutic process within a clinical setting within Ireland. Practice Education 2 is an eight week practice placement at the end of semester 2 in which students complete a minimum of 296 hours of practice education.

Syllabus:

Students will complete a practice placement for 8 weeks of the semester up to 296 hours. Articulate practice knowledge of the Occupational Therapy process ; prioritise assessment findings; clinical reasoning strategies in the setting; communication and personal management skills and develop these core skills within his/her practice.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

To articulate practice knowledge of the therapy process in a service context. To critique the evidence for Occupational Therapy in an identified practice setting To prioritise information relevant to a client to inform the Occupational Therapy intervention process. To reflect and act on their own clinical strengths and learning goals.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

To acknowledge the importance of a client- centred approach to the Occupational Therapy. To demonstrate a capacity for self-reflection. Demonstrate an ability to interact with individuals in a professional manner.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

To demonstrate a range of clinical reasoning strategies: reflecting on assessment protocols, the setting, interventions available and desired outcomes. To demonstrate communication skills with clients, carers and team members including formal/informal written and oral communication. To perform a range of occupational therapy skills, using occupation, in a safe and effective manner with guidance.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

TEACHING The student will engage in experiential learning within a specified health or social care setting under the supervision of a named practice educator who will be a fully qualified occupational therapist. Additional support will also to be provided by staff within the University of Limerick. Student learning will be experiential and there will be a mixture of patient contact, case studies discussion and tutorials. Self directed study. LEARNING Student learning will be experiential and there will be a mixture of patient contact, case studies discussion and tutorials. Student learning will be structured using a learning contract. Students are expected to articulate practice knowledge of the Occupational Therapy process ; prioritise assessment findings; demonstrate a range of clinical reasoning strategies in the setting; demonstrate effective communication and personal management skills and develop these core skills within his/her practice.
