Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module has been adjusted to better align with UL priorities of internationalising the curriculum and reduced from 15 to 12 ECTS. Content relating to examination of Irish health/welfare services and community service delivery will be removed as it appears in new module Engaging Through Complexity and OT6002, OT6022 and new module IPE module PPP2. The total hours scheduled for this module will be 72 hours (scheduled as 12 hours per week and 4 additional seminar rooms for 3 hours weeks 1, 3, and 5. starting in week 9.)

Syllabus:

The application of therapeutic occupations and the use of appropriate resources; Examine cardiopulmonary conditions and neurological conditions including, for example Spinal Cord Injury, Cerebral Vascular Accident, Motor Neuron Disease, tumours of the Central Nervous System and Dementia and their impact on occupational performance. Principles of Universal Design, including assessment and application of assistive technologies and environmental resources that enable or prevent inclusion e.g. housing and community facilities. Integration of theoretical perspectives into practice.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

1. Student will rationalise selected approaches to treatment e.g. neuro-developmental, rehabilitative or compensatory approaches. 2. Student will predict likely future needs and service requirements for clients 3. Students will identify the signs and symptoms of Dysphasia

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

1. Student will demonstrate the ability to transfer specific occupational therapy process skills from one client group to another 2. Student will demonstrate the importance of continuing professional development

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

1. Student will formulate and justify plans of intervention from initial assessment through to evaluation of outcomes 2. Student will identify sources of information for consumers of services within local and national contexts.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module is delivered via lectures and seminars. Consideration of recent guidelines in neuro rehabilitation and research relating to neuroplasticity and the implication of these on practice are included.
