Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module facilitates students to see the impact their work will have on individual users and society as a whole. Focusing on team projects and collaborative work, students will work through design issues and complex problems to develop solutions that improve the lives of users and community (both local and international).

Syllabus:

• Emerging Design Trends: Service Design, Transformative Design, Product Service Systems, Participatory Design, Universal/ Inclusive Design. • Responsible design practice (ethics, social & cultural inclusion, diversity of practice). • Forecasting and future trends. • Design for Society, Social Design, Social Innovation, and Design for Social Impact.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: • Understand emerging design trends. • Respond to real world societal design problems with a thorough user-driven design process. • Develop solutions for future hypothetical scenarios using future trend forecasting.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: • Demonstrate sensitivity and empathy for community and societal problems.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This is a studio-based design module with content delivered through: project work, tutoring, discussion groups, critiques, workshops, and experimental learning. This practical approach encourages students to address problems from a variety of perspectives as well as generating and realising the most appropriate solutions for current contemporary and societal problems.
