Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is designed to introduce the legal and institutional framework of employment law in Ireland and to examine the implications of the latter on the role of the front line manager. Develop understanding and knowledge of key regulatory environment affecting IR / HR and being able to interpert and apply this knowledge in an organisatioal context.

Syllabus:

Syllabus includes - Key role of front line manager, Framework of employment law in Ireland, Role of third party institutions, Legal aspects of employment practices, Grievance and Disciplinary practices, Conducting fact-finding Counselling / Disciplinary interviews, Active listening, communication and feedback skills.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Conduct fact-finding counselling / discipline interview. Distinguish and develop a detailed understanding of the various interviewing proccesses and techniques. Develop core communication and active listening skills. Understand and be knowledgeable in the relevant IR / HR legislation relating to employee relations.

Demostrate a deeper level of insight and understand of the employement regulatory environment. Value and understand the main theories and concepts associated with managing employee relations. Acknowledege diversity and family freindly employment problems

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be taught in both interactive workshop based format and by distance Learning. While based on essential academic theories, concepts and techniques there will also be significant focus afforded to individual personal development allied with the pratical application of learning within the workplace.
